Frasers Hill

Frasers Hill is about 105 km (65 miles) north of Kuala Lumpur. On the main range between the states of Selangor and Pahang. It lies about 1,200 m (3,900 ft) on the spine of the Main Range mountains.

When to go

Any time of the year, but best times are between March and September.

Overland via Kuala Kubu Baru (TR 55) and then take the junction at the "Gap" for Fraser's Hill. The last 8 km (5 miles) from the Gap to Fraser's Hill is a regulated road allowing only one-way traffic, uphill (odd hours) and downhill (even hours), by daylight (It is not advisable to make this leg of the journey at night). There is now also a new road access up to Frasers via the Gap. If this is open take this road up anytime and on your way back you will have to use the old road down.

Not required.

Cool clothing for the day (or during treks) and warmer clothes during the evening. Sturdy shoes for the trails, rainwear, and be prepared for leaches. Camera and binoculars are recommended.

A limited range of accommodations: hotels or apartments or in government/private bungalows (bookings via Fraser's Hill Development Corporation or individual bungalow owners). Alternatively, you could stay down at the GAP resthouse (bookings via the District Office or at the resthouse directly). Well signposted walking and jungle trails, the most strenuous being the trial to the peak of Pine Tree Hill (at 1,448 m or 4,750 ft). Hard-going but worth it it if you ar want to get up close to typical montane habitats. WWF-Malaysia also has a well-established nature education center (FHNEC) at the hill station.

Largely lower montane forests; towards the higher peaks tending towards upper montane forests and down the valleys into Dipterocarp forests. Bird watching is good everywhere (in June, an annual international bird race is held here). Trails are clearly signposted and the walk down to the Gap will give you a good opportunity to glimpse non-montane birds. Many birders are reporting typically lowland-birds well above its range so do not be surprise to record especially along the Gap road.

Visitor Activities

Trail walking and treks, bird watching, photography, botanising. On the way to Fraser's Hill is the internationally renown white-water river, the Sungai Selangor (several operators run river running trips, in rafts or kayaks). Some of these activities may have been disrupted with the building of the Selangor dam.
